This page only forms a general introduction to the nations located on the northern half of the continent of Ebewar. For maps of Ebewar-North I refer to the Cartography section and for topics related to Ebewar-North alone I refer to the Encyclopedia section.
With a large southern half it took me a lot of thinking on how I would structure the northern half. I did not want to have one big landmass, but I did know it would not be smaller in width but extending out. But just having this would be boring, so I decided to make a split with a huge inner sea. The western part, which I would later name Arieal, would be dominant, while the eastern part, which I would name Deinaegea, would be wild and mostly barbaric country. As I had already made up that there had to be plains to the north of Hiora, this automatically reduced the westcoast in size. As the climate would be much harsher I decided to create a number of small nations along the coast who would suffere from raids from the plains to the east. Deinaegea was easy to fill in with only some small city states along the east coast and some smaller nations along the west coast (along the Niarinna Sea).
I knew the plains had to end at some point and there had to be some nations along the north-west coast of the Niarinna Sea. I decided to form a large nation where the provinces would be quite autonomic. I also added a number of large rivers to improve the liveability of the region. The area became a bit too large so I cut up the west into some independent nations, although related to the one in the east.
The western part of Arieal remained unfilled for some time. I had already decided on the existence of Sidasia but not on what would be next. When I drew Sequewar I connected it with Arieal and also leaving some fair amount of space for the existence of nations. Here I decided to create the multitude of semi-barbarian Orai nations which were basically a follow-up of the small nations in the south. Overall the whole of Ebewar-North would be populated with Orai, but as the population was so low, it would hardly matter much.
The climate of Ebewar-North
While Ebewar-South is populous and in general has a warm and prosperous climate, Ebewar-North is hardly inhabitated with overall a harsh climate. The main reason is of course its northern latitude, but also the fact that both east and west suffer from a cold ocean current flowing from north to south on both outer coasts. In the west this influence is milder because the land mass forms a border on a less high latitude and connects with a warmer ocean current. In the east this is not the case and the ocean current reaches up into the arctic.
With a large width between both two outer coasts Ebewar-North would surely suffer from having icefields reaching deep into the interior or else having an extremely harsh climate in the major part in the middle. To break this possibility I created the large Niarinna Sea, reducing the amount of land greatly but also allowing for a more temparate climate in the middle. How this would work in reality I don't know. As an extra solution I could make the south-east coast subject to volcanic activity, creating warm water sources that would heat up the water. Even so, I do not particularly have to provide a solution but just go along with what I've made up. The production of crops in North-Arieal is very limited. Fish and cattle are the most important ways of living. The traderoute from Xysyzad to Tyth is important for the import of food. North-Arieal is however richly endowed with gems, gold and silver. West-Arieal has similar harsh conditions as North-Arieal, but continuous fights among the Orai here has prevented the build-up of civilization and a prosperous livelihood.
The geography of Ebewar-North
I've already described most of the geography earlier. The south-western part of Arieal is mountainous and mostly forested. East-Arieal consists of vast plains and is mostly flat with low hills. North-Arieal is mountainous in the west with a transition to hilly to the east ending up in flat coastal lands. Most of it is forested but overall not densily. West-Arieal is a mix of flat lands interspurred with hills and lower mountains.
Deinaegea is a simple subcontinent. It is long and small and mountainous with many valleys while it lies open to the cold arctic winds. This causes the climate to be harsher than in Arieal. Because the landstructure is basically broken up it is hard to set up a civilized structure to found large nations on. As such Deinaegea is inhabited by barbaric peoples except for some sheltered parts along the coasts. Although Deinaegea is forested it is nowhere dense with parts with hardly trees at all. Especially further up north the forest density grows low, and the land is turning to taiga.
